This said, they are not the fastest speakers around and they are a 30 plus years old design, so the resolution isn't exactly the best available today, but perhaps their biggest drawback (aside from size) is that they make you feel extremely good with your mixes, which isn't exactly a plus for a working monitor, so you really have to use them togheter with NS10s type of speaker, which is what I do.Ī mastering engineer I know called the 801's "perfect".īTW I have 801 MAtrix series III, 1998 circa, which was the last batch and is considered the pinnacle of the 801 series with improved crossovers and so forth. Instruments sound totally real / holographic, and they have incredible depth, not to mention the bass response and the volume pressure they can generate which is mind blowing, although this isn't a subject you are asking about. For mids/hi, you overall prefer the sound of amphion or 801s? why?The 801s are super natural sounding. ![]()
